Insights
Population:
Pittsgrove Township has a population of approximately
8,777 persons according to the 2020 U.S. Census. Table
1.1 below shows the breakdown of the population by
race and ethnicity. The ratio of males to females was
almost evenly split, with the median age of the
population being 42.1 years. This is a slightly younger
population than that of Salem County, the median age
of which was 42.5 years.
Household Characteristics:
The type and nature of households can impact the market for businesses and influence the types of commodities and services provided. A large percentage of single parent households with children generally suggests lower household incomes. Large numbers of senior households also suggest a demand for services and retail goods targeted to that segment of the population. The number of single
parent households with children was too small to register as an estimated number or percentage.
Traffic & Circulation:
As noted in the introduction, the Township has an advantage being close to or traversed by some of New Jersey’s major highways. The map on the following page illustrates average daily traffic counts on roadways in and around the Township. As can be seen from that map, none of the interior roadways except Centerton Road/Buck Road has a traffic count greater than 6,000 vehicles daily.3 U.S. Route 40 on the northern border of the Township has an average of 11,000 vehicles daily. Routes 55 and 47 just to the east of the Township is where much of the traffic can be found, with daily counts reaching 48,000 or more vehicles. The N.J. DOT figures afford a closer examination of interior roadway counts For example, Garden Road just east of Centerton Road has an average of 1,854 vehicles daily (2019.) Centerton Road just south of Garden Road has a count of 5,576 vehicles daily (2018), and Almond Road, through Parvin State Park has 2,729 vehicles daily. Counts on Centerton Road at Schalick High School did peak at just over 6,000 vehicles daily.4 Over the years, as new development has occurred in Pittsgrove Township, truck traffic on rural roads and highways has increased. This increase will become more significant should the Township and neighboring communities approve new commercial or industrial operations.
Pittsgrove Township may wish to consider developing a traffic study to determine where concentrations of truck traffic exist today and how such traffic might be redirected to limitvimpacts on the local and more rural highway network.
Commutation & Employment Characteristics:
Of the estimated 4,356 Township residents employed, 1,280 were engaged in education, health care and social assistance. The only other two sectors of the economy in which there were more than 500 residents employed were manufacturing and retail trade. Of the employed 4,356 employed residents of the Township, the great majority worked outside of the County of residence and a small percentage worked outside of New Jersey. This significant level of out-commutation is due in part to the location of theTownship in proximity to Vineland, Millville, and other employment clusters in southernGloucester County. With just over 1,500 jobs in the Township, most residents commute an average of 30 minutes for employment elsewhere.
